Hi



I have a couple of questions for those who have parked at KOSH with -10s. There doesn't seem to be a lost of ground clearance on my wheel pants and am wondering is there is a risk of damage taxing on the uneven grass.



When I flew my PA28 in, there wasn't a problem as the bottom of the pants were higher from the ground.



As well, I am wondering if there is a problem, for similar reasons, with wheels sinking into the ground, especially after rain. I seem to recall a stuck -10 that had a problem getting out for this reason.  Is it worthwhile bringing something for the wheels to sit on and if so are there any recommendations?

Grass has not been a problem for me regarding clearance but, one year I landed RWY 9 and they made me exit left onto the grass.  

Had to taxi a LONG way around the field on grass over small inclines up and over each paved taxi-way intersection to get to show plane parking with the other 10’s.  

Burned up a brake seal and formed a leak due to unavoidably riding the brakes to steer on the grass which was less than smooth.

Also scratched the bottom of a wheel pant on the edge of a taxi way while climbing over the edge of it.

(Replaced seals with viton.)

I live 20 minutes by air from KOSH so if they are landing runway 9 I now drive.

I've had my '10 there several times with no problems with ground clearance.

As far as rain and soft ground that could be a problem if you try to move

the plane very soon after a heavy rain. One year with my 5th wheel parked in

camp Scholler on the highest hump I could see hoping to avoid being in a

lake, after the rain  I was an island in the middle of a lake and couldn't

go anywhere anyway till things dried up a bit. Even though drainage seems

good over at HBC you want to avoid any low, damp areas when you taxi. One

year a vendor was displaying some tank-type tracks that could be attached to

pickups and ATV's. Maybe he now has some for aircraft.

Not really a problem for wheel pants in the RV-10 area while taxiing but watch the transition from grass to the taxiway.Â  If really concerned about sinking into the ground while parked for an extended time, just bring along some pieces of plywood to put under the tires.Â  Make sure you pick them up when leaving though.Â Even duringÂ SloshkoshÂ (2010) no issues, but I did have plywood under the tires.Â  Just 3 1x1' pieces of 1/2" would be fine.Â

Hmmmm

A long taxi is a bit of a concern. Years ago I have a huge taxi going the other way to GAP. In a PA28 it was a bumpy long taxi. I also had a marshalled almost direct me into a concrete manhole. 

Anyway, is there anyway to avoid a long taxi?  I was thinking of having both HBP and GAP signs and using whichever was appropriate.

I have flown in to kOSH many times and have never been given a choice. Is there a way to get 18/36 for sure?

Thanks for the tip on the plywood squares. When I was parked, my wheels started to sink almost immediately. After I rolled up on the squares the problem was solved.
