The actual electronics is certainly similar to the 10 Dof board...."degrees of Freedon"... it incorporates a solid state 3 axis qyro,Triple axis magnetometer, 3 axis accelerometer..and barometer for altitude.... $7 dollars and 47 cents.. on ebay.. Think I paid 9 bucks...
It can be set up to communicate with the Arduino processor board...which can be programmed to communicate with a display and to drive the servos. The processor board cost 5 bucks or so..mostly from China or Hong Kong for the knock off versions.. The original Arduino was developed in Italy...and therefore cost more...
the 10 dof is the size of ones thumb...and the Arduino is credit card size...
I got the hots for an auto pilot experiment for my current Firefly....and bought these two boards along with the Raspberry Pi (35 bucks) which is also capable of taking the 10 dof board inputs...and driving a video display...
Most of the canned software is out there... written in some version of C language..
You tube has several videos showing the operation of a makeshift auto pilot using these devices...Herb

for me?? Not claiming to be an 'spert on the subject...!
The boards come assembled....and it is a matter of adding power and hooking the serial port up... the serial communication is self clocking..only 2 lines...called I2L as I recall...search that...Yahoo or Google.. Each chip on the 9 or 10 Dof board have a unique address and are monitoring the serial port for their chance to communicate...
I have the parts but have not tried to implement it...would need a battery to run the robust servo's. and a servo driver board...equally cheap...since the auto pilot would only operate on trim tabs...it would be over ridden by the joy stick inputs...and would not do well in very turbulent air...
No one has tried it that I can find...??
Downloading the software(the routines to communicate with the 10dof and gather the info are already written but could need some modification there requiring some knowledge of the C language and ability with an editor/ assembler... tutorials are on the net and almost all computer operating systems come with a C compiler and suitable editor..
a project for sure... I have the parts...but then again I have some other parts that have not been useful at age 72!!

Thought of using an Arduino and heavy duty RC servo to create an electric elevator trim for the firefly but never did it. It would be a simple matter though with no gyro required. A pot or momentary switch could be used as a control in the cockpit somewhere with the servo contained in the elevator hooked to a trim tab. Servo sketches are readily available. The entire Arduino board would not be necessary once your software routine was debugged, just the microprocessor, regulated 5 volt power, and power transistor/FET to source the current needed by the servo.

a 555 timer circuit might be the simplest way to go...pot on the panel ,
timer circuit...and three wires to the servo.

The thread seems to have forked to using a servo as a simple trim tab
controller. On that subject...
The servos have feedback pots (sorry; potentiometers) that can drive an
LED ladder display. They have to have them for feedback to the

Hi Charlie, that took me back about 70 years.When I was an ack ack gunner we
did an exercise every day called `Aligning pots and selsyns`. This was to
check that the signal from the predictor/radar/tracker did not align the
guns 180 degrees out of sync. (It happened sometimes anyway) I don`t think
that I have heard a reference to `pots` in that sense since those days.

I hope the trip down memory lane doesn't get you shot. :-O
A couple of my lives before retirement (several, now that I think about
it...) were in electronics related fields, and 'pot' was and still is
tech slang for potentiometer. In at least one of the other lives, it was
slang for something else, too, but that's for another day.
What you're describing was likely just a bigger, heavier precursor to
the little r/c servos currently discussed.
