I was changing the oil on Sunday in my RV-4, and my "assistant" noticed gas

pouring out of my gascolator when I ran the electric fuel pump.  The fuel

pump is in the cockpit (behind the battery) and the gascolator is on the

pressure side of the pump, which is most likely not where it is meant to be.



Question is what should I do?  It seems to me that the easiest thing would

be to change the gascolator to one that can take the pressure.  Looking at

Aircraft Spruce, there seems to be two candidates that seem to claim they do

- Andair and Usher.  I can't tell much from the photos in the catalog.  The

Andair is 2x the price of the Usher, but I can't tell if the Usher has a

sump drain sample valve.



Any suggestions or experience, please?

I have the Andair ... had one small problem ... had a pin size hole in the  

bottom and when I turned on the pump .. gas sprayed out ...

 

Had the hole closed by a professional ... no problems since.

Paul, sounds like the gasket just went bad.  you can

get a new screw-in fuel poppet and replace current one

and prob. be fine...i did that some yrs. back.  bill c

Bill,

What is a "fuel poppet" ????



Paul,

I had the same thing happen after servicing the gascolator........scared the 

poop out of me, seeing fuel spray out.......so glad we did a systems check 

before run up.......

now I'm not an A&P......but I know how to service a gascolator (from tractor 

days)

but I found after close inspection the gasket is very susceptable to being 

pushed to the inside of the cup.  I always keep new gaskets on hand to 

replace worn ones.......this one didn't look worn, so I didn't replace 

it.......but I replace then every time now.

I have a carb to ..........and the gascolator is suposed to handle the fuel 

pressure........

I have agree.......the andair looks very good to me........

but I have admit.......I kinda agree with Stormy toooo......I think it can 

cause more possible harm then the little good it is doing.

Thats why they call it EXPERMENTAL........

Thanks everyone.  I am still concerned about having a regular gascolator on

pressure side of a pump.  I might go ahead and replace it with the Andair,

since it specifically states it can go on the pressure side.



BTW, I used to not have a gascolator too.  After a few problems with water

contamination, my A&P suggested we put one in.

My RV-4 has a gascolator on the pressure side of the pump and I have had no 

problems. Don't know what brand it is, but it looks to be one of the cheaper 

ones.



I sump the tanks after every fill up and before the next flight if the plane 

sat for a day or two. I only check the gascolator when I change the oil 

since it is very hard to get under the cowling to sump it and also the fuel 

pump has to be running as well to get much out of it.

I have an Andair that I am not going to use, I was going to put it on my 8, 

but I am fuel injected and don't need it now. It is new in the box, let me 

know if you want it.
