Finishing up the repairs on the Firefly nose bowl, next comes the windshield. The minimal windshield we had on it before was not very good. We would like to see other options for windshields for the Firestar / Firefly, hopefully this next time we can come up with something that works better to keep the wind buffet in your face to a minimum.

This is about is simple and light as it gets Richard. It simply flexes open and locks down with a prop rod and old fashion door latch. It’s .060” Lexan.

With my Firestars full enclosure kit came the long windshield and center windshield support tube that ran from the dash to the top overhead ring support.That was the most comfortable addition, The long windshield that extended to your shoulder. It made communication on the radio possible as well as ending the fatigue from air buffeting. G.Aman FS2- MK3C

This is what I used on my FS. Normal windshield with a faring. Worked
good. Could wear a base ball cap and my eye glasses without goggles.
Before, the wind hit me right in the face.

Me too. I installed a fixed windshield after speaking with John H, and it is indeed more comfortable, but getting in and out of the aircraft is quite a spectacle. If anyone has details of a good safe latching system that allows easy entry/exit I'd love to see it.

Hi Jerry. I sent a few pictures to Richard Pike yesterday. Maybe he’ll share. It’s very much like my flexing MKII was . It uses a simple old fashion screen door locking latch with great.

Dang George, that looks pretty simple and slick! The system you use LOOKS just like the system that Larry C described to me on his FS2. Nice clean installation.
I am ASSUMING that you swing the windshield over and "plug in" the front pin, then latch the rear pin? Or do you have a double-pin latch that engages both front and rear pins at the same time?

The latch and prop are what holds everything down and locked. The prop rod simply lays down and inserts into the little chronology steel fitting on the nose pod. It’s hinged at the rear latch by a piece of plastic fuel line.

The canopy rail on the entry side is a piece of aluminum U channel that measures 3/4” on the inside so it just fits over the cockpit frame rail. It has some foam window strip to keep from damaging the fabric. The Lexan sandwiches between the U channel and piece of aluminum L channel. I used 8-32 screws that I cut down so they wouldn’t damage the fabric also. I cut most of one side of L channel down to just make a small entry handle. The hinge side( just flexes open) is a piece of aluminum L channel with the Lexan sandwiched between it and 3/4” aluminum strip with aluminum rivets.You use the prop rod during entry then fold it down to attach it on to the aluminum channel with a small piece of Velcro then flex it so it slides into that little steel fitting at the nose pod. That holds everything in place. The original Firestar is a lot harder to get into then the Firestar II.
I got all this aluminum channel from the Home Depot.
I’ve got 145 hours on this system so far. The only down side is it shakes a lot when taxiing on rough grass. It’s smooth as glass in flight. If you want to see it in action go to my YouTube channel and check out some of my videos.

Eugene: do your flip up canopies latch in the back, or does gravity just hold them in place?
