During my annual, I remove and clean these filters. I’ve never had a problem with them. Knock on wood!

Some many years ago my filters also failed on taking off as engine went to full boost, backed off boost and engine ran fine, landed, changed filters all ok. Replaced with a andair, never a problem since. I too regularly checked the original filters, probably some stuff still in fuel tank back then.I check my andair frequently and very little in bowl and filter.

Have two Andair gascolators in G-LDVO and never had a problem since they were installed during the build several years ago.Never seen any water in them. Replace filters regardless every couple of years with new seals.

David,

As recounted at the Committee meeting.

Flew ~100 hours (a/c hours 200) then suffered a stoppage at 1800ft close to Elstree ATZ. Switched to reserve but made a glide approach and landing under Mayday.

Glass type (Aeroline or Moeller) fitted looks clear but when removed had light green coloured sludge that blocked the primary feed (912ULS).

Since replaced with a pair of Andair FX250-E (62 micron filter size) and I also clean the filter screens (also on the gascolator) ever 12 months.

No problems since fitting the Andair filters.

Hello David,
I know you asked for details to your personal mail but it has become a public debate anyway so here is my two pennyworth.

I use two Sytec PRO896 filters which have a 52 micron mesh as proposed by Europa in a main and reserve setup. I change them during the annual and check them at 25 hour intervals.
Fortunately I have never seen more than a few specks of contamination in the filters and I am happy with their performance to date. My aircraft is kept in a hanger unless traveling so I have never seen any water contamination which could clog a filter of this size quite quickly I imagine.

In this application the filter is there to protect the float needle valve and jets in the carburetter, if it gets clogged it's done it's job but the capacity was insufficient for the amount of contamination/hours of operation.

Hello David,
I recently have a problem during take-off. Powerloss and the motor stop during the return to airfield.
After inspection of the filters, I was discover some water and particules . I will replace the in-line filter by gascolator. Filters was fully clean and inspected 15h of flying ago. I use mogas and a electric pump with a filter to fill the tank. Actually, the hangar is very humide with big temperatures differences. I have lot of condensation.

Bonjour Olivier
Just picking up on something you mentioned in your reply, could you explain
your electric fuel pump set up in some detail as I would be very interested
in something that saves me lifting 20LTR cans. Especially as I have a
classic with the filler on the top of the fuselage!
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
Have you ever tried the Manual Hand operated Pressure Pump specially
designed for Jerry Cans? tinyurl.com/Hand-Operated-Pressure-Pump
I have one and it works well but for the Europa roof inlet I had to extend
the original pipe.

Mike,
I actually purchased my hand pump from Flylight at the BMAA Flying Show (at)
Popham a few years ago. I've just checked their online shop and discovered
that they also sell a 1m extension for their pump. See link below.

Thanks again James, I've had a look and I have seen one of these before but
was told that the pump cylinder connection point was weak, I was also
thinking that the transfer rate might be poor but I have no concrete
evidence that this is the case. I'm interested to know what yours has been
like in use as I would be happy to give it a go.
Cheers

Yes Mike, the Pump Cylinder connection point is weak but if you're careful
and gentle (not rough) with it, it's fine. As regards the flow rate; I use
mine in conjunction with a Mr. Funnel (with built in Water Filter) Funnel,
the pump's flow rate easily out-runs the funnel's flow rate. I've never
tried it with a standard funnel as I would never use a funnel without a
water filter!

James

Hi Mike

I've had one for ages. The transfer rate is fine and once you get it going it will siphon.

Yes the pipe where the pump attaches looks a bit weak but mine has lasted ages. If I was clever I'd graft on a shraeder valve and pressurise the jerry can using a pumped up old car tyre.

Kind Regards

Its sounds obvious but contaminated fuel filters can only come from two sources:
1. The fuel being put into the aircraft tank (Fuelling/External)
2. (Internal) The aircrafts own fuel storage (tanks) and reticulation system (fuel lines & pumps)
1.Fuelling/External
I rarely if ever find material in my filters – always visually checked at 50 hrs and cleaned out at 100 hrs.
Ever since owning my own aircraft, I have used a filter funnel when fuelling my aircraft, at home and on away trips. I made my own using special fuel filter fabric & an off the shelf funnel but you can purchase a “Mr Funnel” to achieve the same benefit.
I only purchase name brand fuel, from high turnover fuel stations – minimal chance of contamination – so far so good.
I use “plastic” 20 litre fuel containers obtained cheaply from my local hardware. They are only used for my aircraft (ULP) so contamination can only come from the bowser. There is nil risk of paint, rust or condensation (as long as they are well sealed).
As I have aged, I have found it increasingly difficult to achieve a controlled pour out of a 20 L container held at shoulder height, so have built a 12 V, positive displacement, vane transfer pump, using a cheap Chinese “Holly” copy and fuel rated piping (almost identical to that shown by Oliver above). Very efficient, self-priming and with good “head” for high wing applications.
Fuel cap must seal against rain/dew – replace “O” rings/seals at 5 years.
If you are putting in clean fuel, the chances of filter contamination/blockage are reduced by almost 100%
2. Internal
Internal contamination can only come from deteriorating fuel lines, pump systems and tank.
I always use ethanol rated, Gates Fuel Injection hose for my fuel lines and am “religiose” about the 5 year replacement. New hoses must always be blown out, with compressed air, to remove any particles/dust, insects, etc, just before fitting – never had a problem. I have almost nil experience with metal fuel lines so won’t comment.
Fuel pumps can deteriorate over time but in 12 years & 920 hrs, I haven’t seen any evidence of this happening.
“Plastic” fuel tanks and bladders have been known to shed particles – usually when new, anecdotally also when ethanol is present – always check filters for evidence of this starting. In my opinion, if this happens, the only safe solution is replacement with a more durable tank.
Alloy tanks are prone to condensation – I haven’t used a “Gascolator” since leaving GA, however I do my drain checks before the first flight of the day. Even the suspicion of water and I repeat drain, until sure none remains. Water in my filters & filter funnel is also something I look for - I rarely see it.

For the last 12 years (920 hrs)I have used Hengst fuel filters

Hengst H102 WK

Hengst H103 WK

Benefits:
Gauze filter medium
Almost indestructible, completely leak proof, casing
Clear casing for inspection
Light weight. I always carry a couple of spares never used them.
Cheap if you shop around & purchase a few.
Can be "blown out" but so cheap, why bother
