I have some loose spark plug inserts on my M-14PF and wondering what the best fix is? I am hoping it is a field repair I can do myself. I already texted my M-14/Yak savant Dennis Savarese, and hope to get more input from everyone.
Thanks
Todd

Unfortunately there is no "field repair" for this quite common problem. The cylinder needs to go to a good machine shop; remove the loose insert; enlarge and make new threads in the cylinder and similarly machine a larger insert. And it should be inserted with an interference fit with the cylinder hot and the insert cold when assembling.

Todd,
Richard is correct, that the cylinder must be removed to be
repaired. Attached are service instructions for the replacement. We also can
supply the oversize bushings and oversize checking pins.
The cause of the bushings loosening is usually over torquing of the spark
plugs, removing and installing while the engine is hot or and lack of
antiseizure compound when installing spark plugs.

Thanks guys, same thing Dennis recommends. Can a guy get away with flying it to a shop for the repairs?

That is an interesting question! The bottom line is that the insert would definitely blow out of the cylinder at a stage, and then of course you will have a jet of hot exhaust, of course ignited by the other sparking plug blowing out. But if you're talking about a 20 minute flight back to base, it is probably a gamble worth taking!

I am looking at a rebuilt engine but if I were to take off a couple cylinders where would you guys recommend me sending them in to, to be resleaved for the spark plug inserts? Talked to Rhonda at Barrett they have the EO and parts but have not done one yet, Also not sure what ring set up I have for the pistons will these parts be readily available and through who?

The cylinder does not have to be “sleeved”. Just replace the spark plug inserts.
