Starting thread for this week.

Thanks to everyone who posted last week.

I'm hoping the wet snow goes away so i can get in another flight.

Indeed they are very quiet, and wear *way* better than the much heavier europa stockers.

Hi Fred

I don't have much time in Mono's, but I wasn't thrilled with the noise coming from the outrigger wheels and am hoping the 5" pneumatic are quieter. In addition I didn't like the wheel bearings that are opened with the provided blue wheels. The gray Colesons purchased also had opened bearings, but I put close fitting spacers to reasonably cover them.
The bearings on 5" pneumatic Roller Blade wheels are sealed and corrosion resistant. All I have on them:
Package these wheels with bearings (Optional) ($7.00 USD):
Twincam Rustproof
They may have some print on them. They are nice bearings with very little friction. I installed spacers between them. I'm pretty certain that can take RPMs of landing downwind on a VERY Hot and Humid day in Nepal!

60mph = 5,280' per minute. Landing in Nepal will be 80mph ground speed or 7,040' per minute or 84,480" per minute. 5" diameter times Pi = 15,708". 84,480 / 15,708 = 5,378 rpm.

I spun each wheel up with 130psi air from compressor and had quite the gyroscope going. Vibration was very acceptable. I'm pretty certain bearings will last tire life. Just as a precaution I would replace bearings at tire and tube replacement time.

I'm not quite sure what my wheels are made out of, I didn't scratch them, but they are slightly magnetic.:
Powerslide Nordic Road Warrior II 125mm Air Wheel
Perhaps Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastic? I know JB KWIK Weld is slightly magnetic, they may add some steel too?

Happy New Year!
Ron P.

The snow on the ground earlier this week did indeed melt by Friday afternoon. We were able to get in a short local flight under 2500 OVC ceilings to finish the year. Snow is forecast this weekend and temps below freezing so our grass strip will be snow covered and unusable. We added Stabil and put our Europa away for the winter.

Put another ~8hrs of boring holes in the sky, moving the AOA vane forward incrementally to find the sweet spot for the best dynamic range (without it being beyond the leading edge), and after brainstorming with Ron P., added flow deflector brakes to the outrigger wheels- which get spin’n pretty darn good at cruise….still to be tested.

All great fun!

May ‘22 be a normal and fun year for all!
Cheers,
PeteZ

Peter, never heard of the outrigger spinning bit before and it’s very interesting. I’m battling vibration and whistling at high speeds and this could be one thing for me to try. Thanks for posting it.

Flew up to Takaka from Rangiora, (Google) beautiful weather, airline type flight, 7500ft direct, no controlled airspace, no bumps, no cheese and biscuits, 1 hour 20mins with my wify! Not the air hostess! Had a swim at Ligar Bay, and saw relatives then back via Abel Tasman National park, beat up Kayakers along the coast, not above 500ft, to Motueka, St Arnaud and Lake Rotoiti, Rainbow Valley through Hells Gate, Island Pass, Lake Tennyson, Hamner and back across the Canterbury Plains to Rangiora. 3.1 hours in total, what a joy. Beautiful high pressure system to cross the Alps at Mt Una. When to spread ashes of my brother-in-law at Ligar bay with family which, if we had driven would have taken us 7 hours each way, overnight, food …..well you do the maths.
15 litres per hour…. EUROPA is such a great touring aircraft.

Hello all,

Well, this week I started on a panel upgrade. I am adding a Garmin G5 as a backup to my Dynon Skyview as well as a Garmin GPS175 IFR navigator. With the help of my wife I relieved the instrument panel surround to accommodate the G5 (above the gear handle rebate) and relocated constant speed controller (top of the center stack). I will also need to relocate the Dynon transponder which was located behind the panel as the navigator will occupy that space. The transponder will reside under the aft baggage bay. I am also upgrading the coax from RG58 to RG400 for the comm radio and installing new RG400 for the GPS. I fabricated a couple of the wiring harnesses and am currently making a mounting bracket for the G5. The IFR navigator arrived today so I can start work on mounting the tray to the center stack.

Until next week,
Erich

Tim,
Great post! You brought back memories of the 3 weeks we spent at the sheep station at FlyInn Tours in NZ 10 years ago. We hiked Abel Tasman and drank beer in Motueka. Heather landed and parked at the Air NZ gates at Christchurch. I landed on a beach and in a farm field. We ate lots of ice cream seems like at every airport! Great vacation!
