Over the years I collected two old BRS chutes, repurposed the parachutes into hand deployed, which left me two left over launchers. One is a rocket, one is an antique that has a 2 pound slug over the top of a couple ten gauge shotgun shells.
Decided that the 4th of July would be a good time to get rid of them, screwed them to a chunk of 4x4, clamped the whole rig into a portable workbench, set it beside the runway, ran a new paracord from the attach cables to an old T-shirt so that they wouldn't go too far when fired, set up the video camera and pulled the red handles. (s)
They didn't fire.
Now I have two malfunctioned explosive ordinance devices sitting at the edge of the airstrip, and a wife who is MOST unhappy.
I am thinking tomorrow I stick them down into a 5 gallon steel bucket filled with wood and charcoal, out in the middle of a 300 acre field, set it on fire, and stay a long way away from it.
But I am open to suggestions.
You can laugh if you want to.

It sounds as though your life experiences and mine are a lot alike. Until I was about 30 I would do something that didn't work out, and when asked, responded with "It seemed like a good idea at the time". Then for the next thirty I was at the top of my game. Now I have reverted to - "It seemed like a good idea at the time", once again.Â
I believe I would ask the Sheriff's dept for guidance. They should have a safe place to dispose of them.

Larry - this makes it even better -
The summer before Covid I called the Sherriff's department, and they sent two officers out, they looked at my mess, and said "Why don't you wait until the 4th of July and just shoot them out into the field?"
So here we are...
Thinking about the safe place to dispose of them; my nephew works for Holston Defense, the BAE run plant that makes explosives, they are just west of Kingsport on the N side of Bays Mountain.
So I called him tonight, thinking he might have some suggestions.
He said they have bunkers full of old ordinance that no one wants to deal with, bunkers full of really nasty stuff that everyone ignores.
But he is willing to get involved, it is his idea to have the burn can out in the middle of the field, he says old explosives are best disposed of by burning.
We'll see.

Okay Larry…… I have one left over from an old BRS and need to get rid of it. My desire was to watch it lift off. I thought it was “a good idea…” Instead, I will be calling the fire department has-mat handler and find out who disposes of this kind of stuff safely.

Richard, I think you’re dealing with propellants vs explosives. Less than 25,000 FPS. Probably significantly less. Difference is a non contained propellant isn’t creating the brisance and over pressure of a high order explosive.
Remove the 2lb slug and any other projectile, and burn in a pit. A long high temp burn would be preferable.
Do it after sunset for entertainment value, lol.

Nephew & I set a 5 gallon steel bucket WAAAY out in the field, pointed the devices down, surrounded it with cinder blocks and covered it with chain link fence.
Had a bunch of scrap wood soaking in kerosene all day, packed into the bucket around the devices, set it on fire and got back.
The two 10 gauge shotgun shells went off after about 15 minutes, good thing we had the chain link fence over everything, the base of the launcher was screwed into the 4x4 with 3/16 wood screws, it sheared them off, and bounced the launcher off the chain link, knocked a pretty good dent in it. The slug went through the bottom of the bucket and is about 11" deep in the ground.
About 15 minutes later the rocket went off with a loud WOOF, it also penetrated the bucket, I cleaned up the mess this morning, took these pictures.
Quite thankful now that the shotgun shell device did not fire Sunday night, since it sheared the screws. Once again the Lord protected his idiot preacher, not to mention the neighbors who were off to the side.

Usually, the neutralization of ammunition is achieved by detonation, as well as by removing equipment (melting, burning, etc.), removing explosive devices or transferring them to a safe position and other methods. Among the new ways of environmentally friendly and safe disposal of explosive devices is the demilitarization of ammunition in cluster or block versions. I think that if I were in such a situation, then after all the necessary procedures, I would contact The very best rubbish removal Portsmouth. They would have handled it. They work with all types of waste, I think that with these too. Then it's all processed and we see them in a different form.
