A friend just sent me this link about the Uavionix EchoUAT.
https://uavionix.com/echouat-update/
If I had to guess, they are position themselves to discontinue it. I'm sad to see that option go since it seems to be the only one on the market that works with exiting transponders like the GTX-327. Also I'm not a fan of using products that require you to use more products from the same company to get the job done. The EchoUAT was somewhat freedom from that. Their alternative is to use the tail beacon X ($2500), which is only ADS-B Out, then having to purchase a AV20 or AV30 to operate it if you elect to stay within their product line. I'm not sure what other options are out there controlling the tail beacon x.
What are others doing for an ADS-B in/out solution? I now have a GTX-327 that I probably wont use now.
The EachoUAT has its flaws but it fills a gap without much equipment change nicely. Most of those flaws could be corrected with software upgrades, but also some hardware to boost the power etc.... Startup idea anyone?
I like the part, "FAA is no longer comfortable with ... the reporting of barometric altitude by the transponder..." I built a solution to this problem a few months ago and Emailed Uavionix about it but never got a reply. If you can read Python, here you go: https://github.com/icarus747/PicoICARUS. Funny enough they came out with an EchoALT.
Some say just get the NGT-9000 and be done with it, but at over $6k....sure sure.

I don't see the problem with this as uAvionix is supplying the echoAlt, wiring harness, and firmware upgrade for FREE. That should take care of any FAA issues.

Kyle asked about what others are doing for ADS-B Out. Here is what I completed a few months ago.
I recently installed a TailbeaconX in N914TX, my Tri-Gear (built by Bob Fowler) and I control it with a GRT Sport EX. This was a winner combination for me because I tossed both an ancient KT-76A transponder and an old AvMap GPS. I shoehorned the Sport EX into the top of the stack where the AvMap used to be, slightly enlarging the cut-out. The TailbeaconX is mounted to the back of the D-panel. FAA PAPR confirms no problems with ADS-B using this configuration. I followed Jim Butcher's advice of placing the GRT magnetometer above my head between the doors; I wrapped the magnetometer in aluminum foil (also Jim's recommendation) and its wires in copper tape to suppress, probably essentially eliminate, RF interference on the magnetometer from either the transponder or the ADS-B Out from the TailbeaconX. What a huge improvement in technology from the >15 year old avionics!

I have recently received my EchoALT and got to work to determine what information it was passing to the EchoUAT over RS232. The format is NMEA and uses the message $PUAVALT with Pressure (mbar), Temp C, Pressure Alt (meters) in the data followed by a checksum (*#).
Code: | $PUAVALT,902.486267,34.292629,965.346741*41 |
High level, I use a python program to convert the pressure ALT to feet to send to the GTX327 in Icarus format over serial.
This link is to the Uavionix document that goes over their NMEA messages.
https://uavionix.com/downloads/truFYX/truFYX-NMEA-ICD.pdf
I'd be happy to go over this in more detail if there is interest.

Kyle,
I just reread your post and understand your solution. So now you can use your GTX327 since echoUAT will supply pressure altitude in feet to it.
What are you using for a certified GPS source?

Jim,
My GPS source is the iLevil AP with the upgraded GPS. The iLevil sends the signal to the EchoALT via a serial out. The EchoALT adds its NMEA message with the GPS messages and sends that to the EchoUAT. I spliced the RS232 out and that goes to a device that translates the NMEA code to Icarus and then to the GTX327.
You could use the same EchoALT signal as source for temperature, but not sure if that is temperature of the device or temperature of the static line.
