I must finally level my work table and get it off of the sawhorses. Because half of my table is under our overhead garage door, I need to know the max height of any part of the fuselage/landing gear assembly before it goes down on its wheels.

Can anyone who is at that stage (or beyond) give me that measurement?

Thanks.

Before you go cutting off legs of your table keep in mind that by the time you get to putting the upper rear skin on you will probably have it off the table and on saw horses.

The most important thing about the table height is that it needs to fit you. You are going to spend a lot of hours working on it.

The component that needed the most vertical clearance from my work
table was the root end of the wing when I rolled it over to access
either the top or bottom side. That is the distance from the rear
spar to the nose of the wing. I don't have an exact measurement handy
but it's over four feet because the root end of the wing was wider
than my table. No part of the fuselage assembly requires more
vertical clearance than that before it goes on its gear.

Larry-
Check out Larry Mac's cruciform jig on his website- you'll have to
modify it a bit for an XL, but I think it's the neatest thing since sliced
bread. I built one for my HDS and will never regret it. I can move my center
section/fuse around with one finger.
For an HDS, 16" from the floor to the bottom of the longitudinal 2x6's.
I have about $50 and 25 hrs time in it.
Picture attached, and for crying out loud, don't anyone complain!
Sheesh- I pay about $15/month more for DSL than dial-up. It's worth it in
the time you spend waiting!

Larry,

My experience was that I wanted the table high for the tail and wings, but
much lower when working on the fuselage. My solution was to use the same
table top resting on saw horses. I simply made two sets of sawhorses at the
two different heights. I did clamp the table top to the saw horses so it
wouldn't move. I got rid of the table top, but I'm still using the saw
horses. My nearly finished canopy is sitting on the high ones right now.
The important thing about the table top is that it must be flat. Level is
good too, but I didn't go crazy worrying about partial degrees.

Yes, check your own working position (ergonomic?), Your back can complain.

We all spend lots of hours working, sometimes we forget how long we are there. More than a couple of nights we got surprised by the Sun raising in the early morning...

Thanks to you guys for the responses. My conclusion is that I will keep my worktable at a comfortable height for work on the wings and control surfaces, and either shorten them as I get into the fuselage work or, more likely, construct a 601XL version of Larry MacFarland's cruciform jig.

I don't want to send anyone scurrying to their workshop, but I never actually received the physical dimension from worktable surface to the top of the highest part of the assembled fuselage (before placing it on mains). I'd still be interested if anyone has that measurement.

Larry-
That dimension would be in the plans, unless you misworded your
question. Think about it.
