Thanks for the story, Mike. It's always pleasant to read about other's experience and you are a good narrator.
Regarding the camlocks, those little wonders have a tendency to disappear when you remove your cowling. I always carry a couple of spares in my on-board toolbag.
I have also been surprised by turbulences on nice winter days. I think that, with the snow, no thermal is happening and there is often an inversion with slightly warmer air say, above 500 ft AGL. As wind moves faster up there, it creates turbulences in the transition layer. As you said, it gets better once we get higher.
Regarding crosswind langind, with my model 3, I found out that my limit is 12 knots crosswind component. If the ATIS reported wind was correct that day, that's the wind at which my plane will gently veer into the wind, at the end of a landing, even with my foot pushing the rudder to its stop, the other way.
Cheers,
Michel

Speaking of crosswinds, I've had a little trouble taxiing my IV
(tailwheel w/Grove gear, and Jabiru engine with the normal CW rotation
viewed from the seat) and making a left turn with a right-rear
quartering wind. No amount of left rudder/brake combination seems to be
able to overcome the wind during this maneuver. I haven't been lucky
enough to have a calm day to practice my taxiing, and both days that I
did, the wind was the same....about 12-15. Is there a "demonstrated
crosswind handling ability" published for these planes? I haven't seen
it if it is. I'm still learning to fly, and have only 2.3 hours
instruction in a tailwheel 180 and only 1.3 hrs taxiing in the 'fox, in
addition to about 34 hrs in other models (trikes).
