I know nothing about radials, absolutely nothing.

What are their advantages/disadvantages.

Where is the cam, do they have a corrosion problem?

Why an odd number of cylinders?

Is the hydraulic lock issue as big as some make it seem?

Hi Milt.

Being such a new list it may take awhile for the guys with more radial experience to find it and chime in.

This link gives a fairly decent overview of the radial - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radial_engine

Odd number of cylinders for the every other firing order.

On the M14 the cam is a steel disk with two rows of lobes on the outer perimeter, front row is for intake and rear row is for exhaust.  The disk is in front of the cylinders (you can see the push rods on the front of engine) it is geared to the crank and turns opposite direction.  Picture of cylinder assembly here   http://www.goflyamoose.com/Main%20Pages/m14p.html  bottom link on page - M14 cylinder drawing.

Hydraulic lock is an issue but if proper procedures are followed it won't be a "problem".  A lot of the M14's are installing lower cylinder manifold drains or "clean kits" to help reduce the pooling of oil in the bottom 3 (typically) cylinders.

Hope that helps a little.
