I received a private email from a Kitfox 2 owner looking for some advice in installing new bungies. He already has the factory new units, but he's having trouble with the configuration of them and not sure how they're connected. What he has is two attach points directly opposite each other, then another underneath a few inches outboard facing down that is perpendicular to the others.
Can someone explain the connections to me or maybe email me a copy of the appropriate page so I can pass it on to him? Would appreciate it.

That sounds like it is the same bungee installation system as the Model 4. if you would like that, email me. I can't seem to figure out how to find member emails on here.

A word of caution, the instructions are to grind/file down the aluminum
nico press type sleeve on one end of each bungee. I did this and I have
to assume that the heat caused my brand new bungee rubber bands at the
end to break during the installation. I thought I was going slow enough
to not create that much heat, but the instructions were very good and
very much needed on my part. Thanks

You should never apply any metal that doesn't spark on a grindstone.
Aluminium should only be filed. Filing will cause a little heat but because
it is slower and the filing is more of a cutting action the heat generated
is much lower.
When you grind the aluminium small particles of the aluminium get imbedded
into the stone. The next time the stone is used the particles can expand
and cause the stone to fly apart. With the speed of modern bench top
grinders this can be very dangerous. Fragments of the stone can depart the
grinder at a fearsome rate of knots! I've seen the results of grinding
aluminium in the form of pieces grindstone hanging out of a wall.

Brass, copper and bronze are also best avoided with a grinder.

Timely post on bungee installation. I've just reinstalled a new leg on my machine and was actually attempting the bungee installation earlier this evening. After some colorful comments I thought I should check the forum archives for some tips... and voila, here's a fresh post. I have a comment and a question.

If the bungee is being put on a model 2 (as mine is) the arrangement of the lugs is a bit different than illustrated in the previously posted instruction. I've attached a scan of the manual which illustrates how the cord is wrapped. Note that there are only two lugs; this jives with what's on my plane.

Now the question: How exactly does a guys make six wraps of this thing? Four, easy... Five possible... Six?!? Does anyone have any tricks I could try?

Well ... it's a two-man's job and a lot of cursing. The trick is how not to loose tension as you pull the next loop. Here is what I did at the third attempt but I am not sure it will work for all.
First, in order to keep the gears from collapsing, I make a Spanish windlass with a thick strong rope between the two gears. Then, after the first loop, I use a flat nylon ribbon and tie the bungee with a clove hitch knot. I then tie the end of the ribbon to the thick rope between the gears. Then I do the next loop with another ribbon. Then a third one. Now, I draw the slack in each ribbon and I release the first one to be used as the fourth on.
The reason for using flat nylon ribbons is that it is the only way you can release it from around the bungee loops that are so tight together around the crossbar. The reason for the clove hitch knot is that it is the best knot for anything under constant load. You can untie it very easily. (I have sailed for 50 years!)

I put the back loop on first so I would have a straighter pull to tighten
the front. I then put around three turns on the gear and tied a piece of
3/8 rope to it. The rope is also a large loop that I can get a good grab on.
Start at the first loop and tighten it as much as possible. When you have
the third loop tighten continue adding and tightening one turn at a time.
When I got the last turn on and tight I replaced the 38 rope with some
strong string to help me fit the loop over the front stud. What I found
really made installation hard was the small clearance the shock cord has to
pass in the skin.

I have read on past posts where guys have used petroleum jelly to make the
cords slide easier while being installed. I have left my plane on floats
the past two years to avoid having to mess with those chords again Smile

Well my Model has run last 2 years on wheels and skis with 5 wraps on bungees over 10 years old. Other than about 4 months a year on amphibs. IT a bit softer but it does seem to work. Just make sure you use safety cables although some here will try to tell you different.

I just put the bungees back on my Avid MK IV yesterday and it took less than 15 minutes for my son and myself. One trick is to mark the bungees with a marker--devide the length of the bungee by the number or raps and mark there and then halfway between each mark. One person above, one person below. Each person now has a mark to strech the bungee to, then he holds it there, passes the end to the other person who pulls the bungee tight to his mark, ect, ect. When you get to the end, the right length of bungee is there to hook on and all the raps have equal tension. Hope this helps, Jim Chuk Avids Kitfox 4  Mn

Check the archives again! This topic gets covered at least
once a year and there are innumerable methods. Mine is to get 4
wraps, then pull the slack to one end using channel-locks, then clamp
the 3rd wrap to the tube using vice grips and leather, then get two
more wraps, repeat until you get six. You can do it solo and with not
much cursing.

I used a similar method solo. Measured and marked where bungees should go
around tubes when completed, streched bungees till beyond that location
knowing there would likely be some slippage and used padded vice grips to
hold for next wrap or two. Biggest problem was blisters on my apparently
tender paws from not wearing gloves and streching bungees bare pawed. Used
kitfox factory bungees rather than risk wrong material or technique, and
duplicated number of wraps on 10 year old originals that began sagging a
little when loaded.
