With all this talk about alcohol I feel like getting a drink !
Here is something new. I am in the process of installing a set of Aveoflash strobe lights. Boy are they super deluxe ! I read about them on the Kitplanes blog site. They look cool and operate without a power pack ! In fact you can touch two wires from the strobe to a 9 volt battery and watch them flash away . They are bright!. I will loose about 4 lbs in weight by removing the Whelans(sp) AND the power consumption is nothing ! ( about 80% less ) That will help tremedously with my over all power usage as the strobes are the biggist consumer and the alternator on the Rotax is not very big.
Spruce is the US distributer.
My old strobes will go on EBAY and that will reduce the overall price.

Sorry I had all those misspelled words in my last post. I wrote it real fast and usually do a spell check but my wife woke up and came around the corner and asked what I was doing. I hit send. She doesn't know I bought these lights. OK,OK,OK but for you old married guys you understand.

Well, I installed my strobes today and am very happy with them!
I got rid of the power pack, wiring and lights and saved myself almost 4 lbs. The biggest benefit is the power draw. These buggers only draw 250 milliamps for the pair !! Now that is nothing!
If you want to read about these go to http://kitplanesmag.blogspot.com Here's a picture. I could not capture the strobe flash although I tried. Are these neat looking or what. " The visible strobe"

Dick-
Try setting the film speed real slow...ASA 80 or lower, or try
setting the camera on manual and set it for maybe 1 or 2 seconds.
Then, using a tripod, make your shot without the on-camera flash...it
looks like you used flash in this shot...did you? Can you set the
flashing rate of those strobes?

Lynn-
I have a basic camera (handheld) with no tripod. Take a look at the Aug 1 Kitplanes blog site. They have a nice picture and a nice article. The strobes are adjustable for the flash pattern.

Ryan,

Thanks for this link. There is a multi part article in Kitplanes relating
to home brew LED position lights. Being the tinkerer that I am, I was
planning to go with their plan, but was hoping for a compact strobe only
light to make my system complete. This is the last step in allowing me to
do final assembly of my aluminum leading edge wings and cover them to see
what they will look like covered.

I currently have the aeroflash units on both wing tips and I am interested in putting a strobe on the tail. Trouble is current draw so I am very interested in the LED lights.

I have one power unit in each wing tip and I have a spare that I was going to use for the tail - only thing stopping me was the current draw.

If I was to buy an LED light can I just hook it up to the standard Aeroflash power unit.?

Regards

Gary

Gary,

LED lights are low voltage. Xenon strobes are very hi voltage. Not compatible.

Gary,

It is my understanding that LED strobes do not require separate power supplies, everything is contained on the board in the light assembly. All they require is a 18AWG wire to each light. If you have a power supply in each wingtip, remove them, and just connect the LED strobes to the regular 14 volt wires.

Lowell, I noticed you mentioned aluminum leading edge wings. Care to elaborate on that?
