This afternoon I started taxiing and heard a metal to metal grinding.
On investigation, I found the upper rubber spacer for the main gear on
the right side was missing and the lower one in bad shape. My plane
only has a little over 50 hours. The left side spacers look to be ok
for now. I guess the upper spacer must have departed after my last
landing because I don't remember hearing that noise before.

Is this a common issue or did I not install and/or tighten the spacers
correctly the first time?

Dan,
I think this is weakness on CH701. I finally cut tread from auto tire to
fit. All four pads seem to be surviving great. Cutting the steel belts on
the tire is a little difficult but can be done.

The little sponge like pads from Zenith last about 5 landings.

Dan,
Yes this is common, did mine 3x until I finally got smart and cut up a truck tire and used the tread portion. has worked great since.

Happened the same to our 701 here, cut one from a old Cessna tire (avoid using car tires, is an airplane Smile  and cut the rubber part(s) to use from the sides of the tire...  Lasted nearly 200 hrs.... Plane has 236 hrs and just looks like the piece of tire needs replacement. Probably this next Saturday... Not a dificult thing to do. Once you get the correct size, cut some extras to save for next 200 hrs "preventive mantainance" or maybe a few more hrs...

So, the obvious question is ...

Have they corrected the problem? Are they now using different material?

I was at my father place a few months ago and out of the blue I asked if he
had any pieces of conveyer belt. He walked to the corner of his shop and
handed me a slab of it. I got a chuckle. Dad's a packrat for everything.

A few months ago in the DVD that came with the Zenith newsletter had someone
doing a pre-flight on a CH701 (I think it was Gus). That CH701 had some
kind of pink material on the main gear. Anyone know what that is?

I used the hose they sent, but replaced it right away (a couple hours flying) for heavy thick belting of some kind. About 1/4 to 3/8 in thick!

I think Zenith also changed the culprit that caused the premature failure of the rubber pad.

I peeked in the parts bin when I was up there in September and it looked to me like that part has been changed. There was a ridge along the bottom side that just cut through the rubber bumper, causing it to fail early. I think they have a new design now.

I also received the rubber hose with my two kits. We finally fixed it by using a six-ply truck tire sidewall.

Mine are in place for temporary fit.
These were hard to drill out the openings for the studs.

I have about 50-hours and many rough field landings on the new Zenith
Urethane pads... They don't show any wear on them and seem to be working
fine.

Thanks to all for the help on this issue. I really like the urethane
solution but not the color. However, being frugal (cheap) and having an
abundance of discarded tires along side the road in my area, I will go
the tire route. This will also please my wife since I will be greening
the landscape. Reduce, reuse, recycle, repair. Smile

Greetings,

Is anyone out there using the radius plates from Grove instead of or in
combination with the "rubber" blocks? I am planning on using them and
wondered about the metal on metal issue.
