In addition to what David Nelson said about a wing cart:

 - Make sure your castering wheels are well attached to a robust structure.  Mine were always falling off/breaking the wood because there is a lot of force acting through them.

 - I used ex-furniture casters which worked fine in the garage, but not on the more uneven driveway.

 - Make one end the shape of the wing rib and the other end flat, to support the main spar as it exits the wing.

 - Decide how you want the wings facing before you cut the shapes. Least space would be lower surfaces facing each other, but facing outwards lets you work through the access panels in the wings.

 - You  don't actually need an outer frame if you use a relatively strong spine, like a 2X4 attached to a 2X6 but make it shorter than the distance from the landing lights to the inner wing.

 - I found foam strips, stapled in place around the curvature of the wing slot helped protect the wings.

Depending on available space C you might want to make two individual carts C which will give you more options in moving the wings around.

One other addition: If you create a "sling" instead of exactly matching the rib shape, then you can face the wing either way.

Very true. I have my RV-10 wings in a cart with carpet slings for the 

leading edge. When I needed one wing out of the way, I borrowed a 

similar cart from a nearby RV-7 builder, which held my -10 wing just 

fine. Having a rigid cross piece to support the spar allows clamping the 

spar to the cart for piece of mind. I have seen an

RV wing accidentally dropped on the in-board leading edge of the fuel 

tank. Not pretty- owner may need to build a new fuel tank.

A "sling" - that's an interesting idea.  I saw a picture recently were somebody 

was using old firehose to hang completed parts from the shop walls.

Do you just walk up to your friendly neighborhood firestation and ask for some 

old firehose?  Heck, I bet if you explained what you were going to use it for, 

they may just give it to you.  I've had that happen at HomeDepot a number of 

years ago when I needed some strips of carpet (probably for the wing cradle).

I used two TGI trusses for my lower rails on the  cart, they work great for attaching the castering wheels.  The TGI was  picked up from a contractors building site.  You could go to the lumber  yard, or a Menard's and get one.  Good luck.

I made my cart from the box that the wing came in. I glued four pieces cut from the side of the box that the spars came in to make the center beam.



I bought 4 casters from Harbor Freight. They were 4" in diameter and I just screwed them in with drywall screws. Since the wheels are so large, there hasn't been much resistance while moving it over the trough between the driveway and the garage floor, and the rough surface of the driveway. If the wheels were small, they would need much more secure attachment. The casters were $2 apiece, so easy on the pocketbook.

 

The RV-9 shows a wing cart which matches a lot of the description given by others here on the list.

may have come out of Tony Bengal's books.
