Jim - presumably that would be the AGM of Matronics, Inc - the organisation that controls and runs the Europa e-mail list. (The Europa Club has no control over the list - we did provide archive files to Matronics from the earlier period when the Club _did_ run the list, but that is where the Club's involvement ended.)

I imagine you have a plan whereby the archives of the Europa list would be transferred to whichever new tool you favour, and arrangements for that new tool to provide similar search facilities as those provided by Matronics. I suppose you have also figured out a persuasive argument that will make it clear to Matt Dralle (head man at Matronics) how advantageous to him your new proposal will be, to ensure that he takes down the Europa list and archives from his servers.

If "no" to any of the above, then you're just going to be fragmenting the Europa community rather than doing anyone a favour. And even if you can answer "yes" to all those questions, and have got Matt's agreement to take down his list and archives, it's clear that most folk who have voiced an opinion are unlikely to follow you anyway - we'll just set up another e-mail list somewhere else!

My personal feeling is that neither Twitter nor FaceBook is a suitable platform for a technical discussion forum. Unlike many other posters here, I subscribe to both, so I am not talking from a position of complete ignorance.

in friendship

Hell no! I don't and won't have a facebook account. They are nor
interested in you, nor in airplanes. They are only interested in money
in whatever way they can get it. They sell everything a healthy
individual would consider "private". Have seen the "like-buttons"
everywhere? They act as little spies: once you are in their system
they can track whatever website you visit, what your interests are, etc.
Have noticed their stock value? Divide that by the amount of users and
you will find that each individual user is worth about 150 US$. That
is what some unknown parties pay them to obtain all your data and
statistics.
George Orwell was an optimist, only about 30 years too early.

I don't care if individuals give away their privacy to facebook to let
them collect 150 US$ for it, but I don't want to be part of this
system. That means that once this forum is moved to facebook it will
be without me.

Frans

Facebook has always surprised me with the huge number of buttons you
have to press to do simple things, and having to reload the entire
page after each click.

Email can be read with an ascii browser such as lynx. The versatility
of email cannot be beaten, yet.

Unless you pick up many new participants, it would be counterproductive to fragment the already small online Europa builder's community.
It would also be good  (imo)  to keep any/all new builder pics on the europaowners.org site.... so they are all in one spot.

Cheers,

Pete

Jim - I counted responses from about 15 people on this topic. All but a couple were not keen to add another place for Europa stuff. That sounds to me like "not enough interested", although of course you may have had supporters of your idea contact you outside the Matronics forum. On the other hand if you are having difficulty reading the Matronics messages you may have missed some of the feedback to your suggestion.

There's nothing to stop you setting up your own bit of Europa cyberspace wherever you want to, but please do make sure that it always has pointers to the well-established discussion forum on the Matronics server, and the big reservoir of pictures on http://europaowners.org (not to be confused with europaowners.com which is about the Lotus car of the same name).

If you don't provide those connexions, people coming across your new site/page/feed/whatever might be tempted to think "can't be much good of an aeroplane if it's got only 1 guy interested in it".

One more thought - I can see a great deal of enthusiasm in your postings (previous threads as well as this one) and am wondering if there is an opening for you on The Europa Club committee - I'm sure your willingness to consider new ideas would be welcome. I'm copying this message to present member of The Europa Club committee for information.

Now back to the garage ...

My two cents is,
Facebook is great for baby and cute dog pictures and very short comments.

I like to hear my fellow builder comments, advice, and experiences, not all their "friends".  From a sales point you need wide dissemination, however, we discuss pointed questions.

I don't see an advantage.

What might make sense is for the Europa company to setup a facebook
page as an advertising effort.

Technical discussions can still continue on this forum.

Hi All

I don't understand this obsession with Facebook, some people seem to need to have the world know what they are doing with up to the minute entries, i.e." I am sitting at departures at Gatwick, going to Barbados for two weeks"!  So what!

Isn't the place for the Europa List, in my humble opinion.

My two cents is,
Facebook is great for baby and cute dog pictures and very short comments.

I like to hear my fellow builder comments, advice, and experiences, not all their "friends". From a sales point you need wide dissemination, however, we discuss pointed questions.

I don't see an advantage.

Short answer: It ain't broke, so don't fix it.

Plus it might probably also not be in our (and others) interest, to see a crashed Europa (like the one in Lübeck) on FB. Only another argument against it.

Count me out of both Facebook and Twitter. They lack "gravitas". Great for the chattering classes (US meaning thereof), but we're a cut above all that childish stuff.
