I'd go for an 8.33 kHz separation.
Just a matter of time before it will be imposed in Europe.
I have a German Filser Funkwerk.

Hi Jan,
Yes I to go for the 8,33 spacing now. Looking on the Garmin 225a or b. Problem is the dimension on depth.
Are you satisfied with the Funkwerk? Problem now with the Becker is that it pick up to mutch noise from the Aircraft when reciving.

No kidding! My Becker has gotten to the point that can hardly hear what I receive. Have tried shielding all of the incoming wiring and even thought about shielding the case.

Check and fix your antenna cable, make sure the shielding is good and the
connections are not corroded and are tight. Also make sure the antenna base
is bonded to the aircraft skin.

I am perfectly satisfied with the Funkwerk, it is very good.
I'm also co-owner of a Yak 52. In the Yak 52 I installed the small Becker
with the PM1200 for intercom.
This also works flawlessly.
But I also replaced the complete cabling (audio cables, push-to-talk
cables, antenna cables).
If you have noise on the Becker, then you should look at the cabling.
Also: I connected all the mass cables on one point for a common mass and
made also sure that this mass point is well connected to the battery.
Verifying and replacing the cables is quite a job of course, but not so
difficult.
You should check the cables before replacing the Becker.
BR,
Jan
PS: consider buying the wiring harness offered as an option with the radio
or the PM 1200. It's generally of a very good quality.

Jan,
I also have the small Becker radio in my CJ, in addition to a Garmin SL-30 as my primary radio. Liked it so much, I replaced my transponder with a one by Becker. In spite of their small size, these are very high quality radios.
The PMA4000 intercom/audio panel by PS Engineering matches the size and appearance of the Becker products and installs in a 2 ¼ inch hole. A nice solution to the problem of limited space.
Zero problems with noise, or interference.

Almost next to impossible to fix this problem a Becker Doc. Sell it to a glider pilot. He'll love it.

Jan, I did get the wiring harness with the radio. Using A/C grade RG 56 cable I believe. Forget who made the antenna but nothing had been a problem until I went to Taylor plug wires then all hell has gradually evolved.
Now this noise is not throttle setting related but with the engine turned off it receives quit clearly? I know, kill the engine to receive! ;^0

Well, I also had more noise when I installed the Taylor plug wires, but
then I still had the original Russian radio (a Briz).
Uninstalling the 8mm cables was not an option, so I replaced the Briz by a
Becker.
I took the time to replace ALL the radio wiring (audio, mike,
push-to-talk, antenna, power supply) and also paid attention to have a
good, common earth connection.
I'm far from a specialist in avionics (Mark is the real specialist). So I
suppose I was lucky.
Afterwards I replaced the Becker by a Funkwerk ATR833 because I wanted an
8.33 kHz separation and the Funkwerk was a good buy for the money.
Then I installed my "old" Becker + a PM1200 on our Yak 52.
There too I replaced ALL the audio wiring and made sure to have one
single, good earthing connection point.
I don't claim that this is the better way to do it (Mark?) but it worked
for me.
Our Yak 52 also has Dennis' plug wires.
The installation on my Yak 50 (including my Garrecht transponder) is
checked and approved by a specialized EASA 145 company (imposed by the
French CAA).

Now this noise is not throttle setting related but with the engine turned
off it receives quit clearly? I know, kill the engine to receive! ;^0

Considering the fact that my 50 is pulled apart to rebuild. Right now is a good time to replace wiring. Now all I need is time to get this done.

Jan, Doc,
As you know we have tested a Becker radio (the 25kHz spacing one) in the
workshop of my company. The Becker is simply not designed for such a
noisy(from electromagnetic field point of view) as the Yak52. It's been
designed for glider operation. It took me all kinds of tricks to get it free
of noise, I finally achieved it though but I am still going to change to a
new Funkwerk because we have to have 8.33kHz spacing anyway as of the first
of jan 2017.
I'd change to a Funkwerk and have the wiring completely redone with proper
screening, common earth etc.

Will the Funkwerk interchange with the 2.5 in panel hole Becker is occupying currently?
