After chatting with a number of people; I am considering either buying or getting into a partnership for a 52. If somebody is selling - please let me know.

Prefer a basic flying 52 with heavy spar and mid to low time engines. Don't care other upgrades as much.
I am in the West Coast (San Francisco) - So closer is better for me.

Younus, I too had a burning need for a Yak 52. For one hour, there is no finer airplane. It handles beautifully, has a great roll rate and will fly upside down all day. 

Then 13 years ago, dear friends took me in hand and gently persuaded me that the Nanchang CJ-6A was, well, just superior. First it's built for a grown man, and not just "140 lb.,18 year old boys," to quote Sergei Boriak. Also, the CJ's flush riveted, has gear that goes away, holds 3 hours of fuel, has a baggage compartment, runs the essentially bulletproof Housai, and is faster than the Yak 52. But most important for those in the San Francisco Bay Area, there are 8 other Nanchangs to fly with. Please see www.baybombersquadron.com.  

Be assured, however, that if indeed you decide to go over to the dark side, we will still welcome you with open arms.... and a slightly retarded throttle.

But make sure you read the last several months of postings. All CJ6 issues and they all want to put in the Yak engine. So if you have a 3 hr butt, and free weekends to apparently work on it, go for it. Now, if you want to fight 1v1 or something more sporting, go with the Yak. Hard aerobatics, Yak. If you want to dance in the cockpit, go CJ. If you want room to go potty in flight, probably CJ. Potty and FLUSH rivets kind of go together. If you plan on staying young and exciting, YAK. You can even carry a whopper with cheese in a Yak. If you want a whopper, cheese and a Coke, CJ. After Enough whoppers then maybe CJ or Yak 18T.
Oh to be 18 again! I don't think I was ever 140lbs?
So there you have. 8 of your new friends in the city by the bay can work on them together. San Francisco, something about that city..... Can't quite remember what they do out there? Boys? Oh never mind.
Either choice is good. For some reason the CJ is a lot more money. Must be the flushing thing.

I would have been so disappointed had there been no reaction. My three hour butt is not the problem. It's my two hour bladder that's the issue.

We all think we have bought the better of the two. Make a spreadsheet of the pros and con's of each especially when you find a couple of aircraft you are interested in. Here are  a few ideas on the yak52 and CJ.  The YAK has the M14P which has more power for HARD aerobatics but it also burns a lot more fuel when you are on a cross country and you will be slower than a CJ. Operating costs go up for this reason. The CJ is  a lot more accessible when working on it. Especially the avionics bay and working within the larger cockpit areas and you do not have to tear floorboards out on the CJ, it has access panels on the belly! The YAKs are generally speaking cheaper to buy, Parts are available  for both. The CJ has a better look with the wing design  and gears in the well look (only a personal Opinion). Do not go by price alone. There is a reason the CJ cost a little more. Could be in the long run it is more desirable of the two!! I have to disagree with the amount of problems that show up on the forum. I have to say a lot more guys are needing help with the YAKs! If HARD aerobatics is NOT your thing then why wouldn't you want an almost bulletproof Housai cheaper gas costs and easier maintenance access. If you need or want the M14P you can always add it to the excellent features of the CJ. Happy Hunting,.....

The thing that would swing it for me would be the community.  You've gotten an invitation to the CJ guys in the Bay Area.  Set up a visit, but them some gas and go flying.

Based on my (limited) experience, it seems like certain areas have a preponderance of certain types.  In LA, the CJs dominate.  In San Diego, it's the Yaks for some reason.  That's probably the case elsewhere in the country also.
You don't buy this type of airplane to fly by yourself, or to go on extended cross countries.  You get into it to do interesting thing a with other pilots.  Because of that, the minor paper differences between Yak or CJ are, IMO, immaterial.  You are joining a community, so I would make that my focus if I were you. Which one has the bed representation in your area, of guys that you ole to be around?
That being said, I've heard that Yak pilots have larger sex organs as a general rule, so maybe that's the way to make the call...

FWIW. Jim "Pappy" Goolsby (CJ6 owner) has documented proof of having the longest pedot tube. Just saying.
